ACADEMIC ASSESSMENTS RED DEER
When learning feels
harder than it needs to be
Academic and psychoeducational assessments for children,
teens and young adults to help make sense of how learning
works.
Why people seek an academic or
achievement assessment
People often seek an academic or achievement assessment (sometimes called psychoeducational assessments) when learning feels harder than it should, or when a child or teen is clearly trying, but still struggling to keep up. You might be seeing frustration, stress or a growing gap between potential and performance, and wondering what’s being missed.
This can show up as:
- Ongoing difficulty with reading, writing or math
- School feeling overwhelming despite support or extra effort
- Big differences between strengths and areas of challenge
- Concerns about learning, progress or confidence at school
Academic and achievement assessments are often about gaining clarity and understanding what kind of support could make learning feel more manageable.
How an academic
assessment can help
This assessment can help make sense of how someone learns and why certain areas may feel more challenging than expected. It’s less about labels, and more about understanding what’s getting in the way and where support could help most.
An assessment can help clarify:
- How reading, writing and math skills are developing
- Where learning strengths are present alongside challenges
- Why schoolwork may feel frustrating or overwhelming
- What kinds of supports or accommodations could make learning feel more manageable
For many families, this understanding brings relief and a clearer path forward.
What the assessment process looks like
Step 01
Initial consultation
We begin with a free 30-minute consultation to talk through learning concerns, school experiences and what you’re hoping to understand better. This helps determine whether an academic or achievement assessment is the right fit and what type of assessment would be most helpful.
Step 02
Assessment sessions
Assessment sessions may include conversations, questionnaires and tasks that look at learning skills such as reading, writing and maths. Sessions may take place in one block or be broken into shorter sessions, depending on age and attention needs.
Step 03
Report and feedback
A clear written report is prepared, followed by a feedback session where results are explained and practical recommendations are discussed, including supports or accommodations.
Timeline & Turnaround
Most academic or achievement assessments are completed and reviewed within around three weeks. Timelines can vary depending on the type of assessment and individual needs, but you’ll always know what to expect before moving forward.
Who academic or achievement
assessments are for
Academic or achievement assessments can be helpful at different stages of learning:
- Children who are finding reading, writing or maths more challenging than expected
- Teens who feel overwhelmed or stuck at school despite trying hard
- Young adults who are navigating post-secondary education and need clearer support
Each assessment is shaped around the individual, taking into account age, learning environment and what’s actually happening day to day.
How results are used
For many families and individuals, the biggest relief comes from finally understanding why learning has felt so difficult. Assessment results can help make sense of what’s been happening, guide supportive steps at school or beyond, and replace uncertainty with a clearer, more compassionate way forward.
A note on fees and coverage
Academic and achievement assessments are completed by a Registered Psychologist, and fees vary depending on the type and scope of the assessment. We’ll talk through costs during the initial consultation so you know what to expect before deciding how to proceed. Some insurance plans may cover all or part of the assessment, and we’re able to direct bill certain providers depending on your plan.
